OPERATIC ITALIAN (ONE COURSE)

Italian opera. Monterey Center. Nov. 2 to Dec. 14, 2011. 1-3 p.m. I have shifted the focus of this course from what I have done in the past. No more than 25% of the course time will be spent studying the libretti in the original Italian. There will be more emphasis on enjoying clips from great operas and learning about the composer and what makes a great opera: the plot, the dramatic conflicts, the themes, the music, the singers. We will be viewing and discussing eight operas, starting with Mozart and working through to Puccini.
